COVID-19 Update (13th March 2020)

URGENT UPDATE COVID-19 – Floorball WA (13th March 2020)

The current global situation associated with COVID-19 presents a unique challenge to our sporting community and public health in WA.

It is, therefore, extremely important that as a state sporting association, we attempt to mitigate risk to the health of our members in line with the Federal Department of Health and WA Department of Health guidelines and recommendations.

In line with triggers identified in the Floorball WA – Risk
Evaluation for Singapore Open 2020 and COVID-19 and in light of the recent Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Smart Traveller advice for reconsidering non-essential travel to all international destinations, Floorball WA has made the decision to withdraw from the Junior Singapore Floorball Open 2020. At this stage Floorball WA is still undertaking a risk assessment for participation in the Singapore Floorball Open for seniors. Please note that this decision is not being taken lightly.

Decision-making under circumstances of significant uncertainty is difficult, and likelihood of a consequence materialising particularly so. A likelihood of one person in the cohort of people associated with FWA’s trip to the Junior Singapore Open suffering a moderate injury or incident (including, in the context of COVID-19, hospitalisation or quarantine) is considered, at this time likely. As such, it is in the best interests of our member’s health and safety that we have made this decision.

As for other competitions, in light of the Federal Government’s recommendation that non-essential mass gatherings of over 500 people should be avoided from Monday 16th March 2020, Floorball WA strongly recommends that all members and participants seriously reconsider their participation in competitions within Australia. Floorball WA will provide further updates on competitions and event advice on this subject in due course. All updates will be provided as soon as more information becomes available. At this stage unless otherwise notified events this weekend will proceed as planned.

Especially, leading into finals and the end of our season, Floorball WA recommends all members, spectators and anyone participating in Floorball across to the state to adhere to the following practices:

* Replace handshaking and physical contact where possible, instead greet or congratulate each other with a foot-tap or by tapping your stick on the ground.
* Do not share whistles or water bottles. Ensure your water bottle is clearly labelled to avoid confusion.
* Take care with food handling at games.
* Continue to cover nose and mouth with tissue or flexed elbow when coughing or sneezing.
* Keep 1.5m distance from anyone that is coughing or sneezing.
* All participants should wash their hands with soap and water and dry with paper towel prior to and after games.

Please note that this is an evolving situation and Floorball WA may take further actions should the need arise.

Any member that meets the WA State Government’s minimum requirements for testing or self-quarantine/self-isolation should self-exclude themselves from participating and seek further medical advice.

Currently in WA there has been no evidence of community transmission of the virus, however, it is recommended that health and hygiene best practice is followed.
